Industry + craft

Loop Loop navigates the tension between industry and craft, between mass production and one-offs. The main goal is to extend product life through its design and production. Holistically looking at modularity, simplicity of build, reversibility, pieces of serial tracking, local and social production. To close the loop we applied our research outcomes on our first own lighting collection.

Looping experiments

An essential ambition guiding our research is to reclaim our freedom from the industrial paradigm while not “throwing the baby with the bath water”. Though we want and urgently need to break free from such a paradigm as a society; engineering, technology and science remain tools of progress and we believe they should be used. Failing to do so leads to the classic pitfalls of exclusive traditional crafts, an exclusivity resulting from being prevented from evolving in synchronisation with the material context of today.
Hence we intend to tap into our technical expertise, that of insiders, in order to fashion our own tools. We seek to fabricate with our own means a series of tools that are borrowed from the industrial world.

Our latest output is a portable anodising line: The Magic Colour Machine, this setup allows to apply strong, non-petroleum-based, reversible colour coatings on aluminium. Being able to reproduce the process at a micro scale allows freedom of hacking it, which resulted in an extremely precise, computer-driven colouring process that applies anodized colour gradients. We hold this step as a proof of concept, as this type of gradient anodizing has (as far as our research goes) not been achieved, neither by the industry nor by the craft.

In terms of perspectives, we want to make more tools and setups logically extending around our starting point, such as metal forming (forging, beading, etching, pressing).

Fade Series

One of our first product explorations is a series of pendant luminaires, called the Fade series: simple, elegant, unique, diverse, affordable and above all colourful.

Aluminum anodizing is an electrolytic coloring process that is well known as an industrialized process. Yet a small scale, entirely self-made setup allows to flip the standard into innovative breakthroughs. It represents the core of our approach in all its potential – how a bottom-up, small scaled, local approach can result in a sustainable way to produce industrial yet personalized design objects.

Who are Loop Loop?

Loop Loop was nonchalantly born from a collaboration between Odin Visser and Charles Gateau. Odin is an expert in product development, lighting and industrial design, Charles brings together materials science, research and niche production techniques. They joined forces to explore a design and production approach that challenges the current paradigms in the field.
